Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bio-identical hormones are defined as hormones identical in chemical structure to the hormones produced by the human body. They are obtained primarily from soya beans and wild yams, and pharmaceutically transformed in a compounding pharmacy to human bio-identical hormones.

In a paper published by Kent Holtorf MD, in Postgraduate Medicine vol. 121; issue 1: January 2009, he summarizes the bio-identical debate with these words “with respect to the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke, substantial scientific and medical evidence demonstrates that bio-identical hormones are safer and more efficacious forms of HRT, than commonly used synthetic versions.”

Another recent study (the EPIC Study) found that a combination of oestrogen and progesterone showed evidence of a significant lower risk of breast cancer than other types of HRT.

Bio-identical hormones can be prescribed in a combination of oestrogen and natural progesterone together with testosterone, DHEA, pregnenolone and melatonin, tailor made to the individual patient’s needs.

Natural progesterone elevates mood, and may help minor depression in the menopause by increasing GABA, a neuro-transmitter in the brain. Progesterone has many beneficial properties including a mild diuretic and sedative effect. It most importantly protects the endometrium of the uterus.

Progesterone can be used in the peri-menopause as well as the menopause sometimes with the addition of a natural phytoestrogen or bio-identical oestrogen for symptom relief.

The addition of testosterone and DHEA is often helpful to women complaining of low energy and loss of sex drive during the menopausal years. Both hormones are derived from plant sources, and are free of side effects if given in low doses and individualized to the patient’s needs, and monitored with blood, saliva or urine tests so that the hormone levels are kept within normal physiological ranges.
