DHEA is a hormone-like substance - the initials stands for dehydroepiandrosterone - produced largely in the adrenal gland, though small amounts are made in the ovaries and gonads too.

It is sometimes described as "the mother hormone", because it is converted into steroid hormones including oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone (all sex hormones) and cortisone. As we age we produce less DHEA

DHEA also acts a an neurotransmitter in the brain and is useful to improve memory and clarity of thoughts.

In women DHEA is mainly converted to testosterone. In general DHEA improves your sense of well-being.
