A combination of 17-beta oestradiol in different strengths is used, usually between 10% and 20% in combination with the much weaker 80% oestriol. Different strengths of oestrogens are customised to suit each individual woman, often starting with the lowest dose, and increasing if necessary to reduce or eliminate symptoms. Oestriol may be used topically for a dry vagina and has benefits for bladder function.
Different routes of administration are available from oral capsules to topical trans-dermal creams or sub-lingual trochees.
